This piece, "A Sea Bass Kinda Love," is inspired by an unforgettable encounter with a giant Sea Bass when I was 16, on my first dive after earning my scuba certification in Catalina Island. During that dive, one of the largest Sea Bass I’ve ever seen slid against my shoulder, and as I turned, I met its glistening eye staring back at me. For what felt like an eternity, we shared a silent connection—a moment of awe, curiosity, and oneness.

This gentle giant swam away, but that connection left an indelible mark on my heart. Giant Sea Bass, like their kelp forest homes, face threats from habitat loss and overfishing. Protected areas like Catalina’s Marine Protected Area give these creatures a chance to thrive, but the declining kelp forests remain a critical concern.

Through this painting, I hope to raise awareness about the importance of preserving kelp forests and our marine environment while celebrating the possibility of coexistence between humanity and nature. The eye of the Sea Bass reflects the bond and love we share with these extraordinary beings.
